Helensvale Pump Station


Project Scope

This project comprised the duplication and replacement of the existing sewerage system including 2 x pump stations, rising main, gravity mains, manholes and road reconstruction.


The project was situated either side of a rail corridor and a substantial component was situated within an operating golf course.

The works comprised:

  • Caisson pump stations construction (2no.) including pipework, pumps and electrical.
  • 400m of up to 900dia gravity main installation and 14 manholes.
  • 800m of rising main installation.
  • Tunnel boring.
  • Sheet piling works.
  • Live cut-ins and change overs.
  • Decommissioning of sewerage infrastructure.


    • The project presented a vast array of challenges including re-designs to 80% of the works, ground water issues and underground latent conditions.


    In particular the discovery of the unstable boulder retaining wall required a complete amendment to the construction methodology for these works and resulted in the project duration extending substantially.


    However, due to the close management of these issues, and the up-to-date feedback provided to the Client, the project was delivered to the satisfaction of the Gold Coast City Council.

    • Challenges

  • Adverse ground conditions were discovered during tunnel boring underneath existing culverts through a creek. A change to the design and construction methodology allowed these works to continue and be completed successfully.

  • Installation of the pipework for re-direction of the sewer to the new pump station was located alongside an unstable 4m boulder retaining wall. Close consultation with the Client resulted in the installation of sheet piling to allow works to be completed.
